What is a TB Test?

A Tuberculosis (TB) Test checks if a person has been infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that cause TB. During the test, a doctor injects a small amount of TB protein (PPD) just under the skin on the forearm. After 48–72 hours, the patient returns to have the injection site checked. The doctor measures the size of the raised area (induration) with a ruler. Redness alone is not important—the hardness is what matters.
