An Overview of Absorbable Sutures
Absorbable sutures include the original catgut, as well as new synthetic materials polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, polydioxanone and caprolactone. They are broken down by processes such as hydrolysis (polyglycolic acid) and proteolytic enzymatic degradation. Depending on the material, the absorption time varies from 10 days to 8 weeks. They are typically used on patients who don't want to go back to the hospital to have their stitches removed or have surgery on internal body tissue. Sometimes absorbable sutures cause inflammation or rejection.
Characteristic
High Tensile Strength- The tensile strength is maintained for more than 5-7 days for wound healing, and its knotting strength is much higher than that of catgut, providing safety for patients.
Good Biocompatibility- It has no allergic reaction, no cytotoxicity, no genotoxicity, no stimulation to the human body, and can promote the ingrowth of fibrous connective tissue.
Reliable Absorption- Can be absorbed by the body through hydrolysis. It begins to be absorbed after 15 days of implantation, most of it is absorbed after 30 days, and completely absorbed within 60-90 days.
